lyrics
I have this voice inside my head
it rehearses things before I say them
sometimes it speaks even as I'm speaking
the voice of my thoughts
lately it's been speaking in the voice of Noam Chomsky
last night I had dinner with him in a dream
He said, we live in an economy that demands frequent wars
a massive portion of it is about
maintaining an army, making weapons
we have no choice
but to go to war
to justify all our preparations for war
Lord have mercy on all our sins
may we find peace and freedom from within
may we know the meaning of enough
may it be on earth as it is in heaven above
We live in an economy that requires the existence of poverty
it's been estimated that our military budget would be enough
to end poverty
if our priorities were different
but then, who would assemble all the cheap consumer goods
to which we've become accustomed
Lord have mercy…
We live in an economy that gives us the kind of leaders we have
to quote one American president
the whole world wants what we got
and we're not gonna give it to them
we could end terrorism if we could lift the economic oppression
the desperation that so many people live with
if we could only share
But if we had different political leaders
who would protect our mutual fund portfolios
our saving for a comfortable retirement
Lord have mercy…
He said all this while his food went cold
and then he took a bite of glazed carrot
I said, Noam, what gives you hope?
He said, when we feel the pain
Cause until we feel the anguish of this monstrous system
nothing will change
Lord have mercy…
